What an interesting time to be living in. While, on one hand, major institutions and small businesses alike seem to be fighting an uphill battle when it comes to keeping the lights on, on the other hand, there's more opportunity than ever to create creative, niche or seemingly-bizarre businesses that might actually stand a chance at finding their people.

Now that the internet has permanently ingrained itself into every waking (and, quite possibly, sleeping) moment of not only everyday life, but of business, there's no ceiling to a prospective business's ability to reach its target audience. It may even stand a chance at attracting some new, non-niche adapters.

It's these exact conditions, I posit, that have allowed Tinglesbar, Toronto's first-ever ASMR spa, not only to survive, but thrive, ever since opening its doors in 2018.

Now in its seventh year, the spa is moving on to a bigger and better space at Yonge and Wellesley, giving ASMR addicts and the merely curious alike the opportunity to experience the tingles for themselves.

Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves, though. As someone whose screentime frequently teeters into the double-digits, with a larger-than-I'd-like-to-admit proportion of that eaten up by TikTok, it's all too easy to assume that ASMR is a household term, but, for all you with healthy phone boundaries, here's what you should know.

Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) is a pleasant or relaxing bodily response to various audiovisual stimuli, which can be anything from a whispering voice to tapping or scratching sounds, and is often described by those who experience it as a "tingly" sensation.

If you haven't heard of it before, it may seem like some sort of bizarre internet subculture, but UCLA Health actually estimates that around 20 per cent of people experience it. Not so niche, after all.

Tinglesbar founder Tammy Lung was an ASMR video consumer herself before she started the business in 2018, opening the doors for an entirely new type of relaxation for ASMR lovers in Toronto.

So, what is actually happening at Tinglesbar? Well, that's more or less up to you.

Each session is tailored towards you and your specific ASMR triggers, and can include anything the likes of hair brushing, head massages, face brushing, whispering or ambient sounds, to say the least.

A bespoke solo session is 60 minutes long and will set you back around $150, or you can opt for a couples session with two resident 'ASMRtists' at around $280. I guess birds of a feather really do flock together.

Look, it's not my thing, but 2025 so far has been such a mess that I have to be in support of anything that helps people unwind at all. If it's not hurting anyone, have at it.

It seems like plenty of people have been getting on board, too, as the brand has partnered with everyone from ROM After Dark to Saje Wellness to spread the ASMR gospel to more people.

After operating from their space in the Annex for years, the business has officially moved on to greener pastures with a brand-new space, which is set to officially open this week.

If reading all of this has you looking in the mirror and reckoning with the reality that you, too, might be an ASMR person (it's ok, you can accept it,) you're in luck, because they're throwing a huge housewarming party on Friday, April 25 to celebrate.

Kicking off at 6:30 p.m., the event will feature complimentary demos, snacks and refreshments, gift bags and a 3o-minute sound bath to get things started on the right foot. They're also offering 30 per cent off ASMR sessions for a limited time during their soft launch using the code 30Soft, so take advantage while you can.

You know, if you want to.

Tinglesbar is located in unit 201 at 9 St. Nicholas Street.
