But it's historically been a challenge for Toronto in the playoffs, as they've operated at just an 18.0 per cent clip since 2017, the fourth-worst mark of any of the 15 teams with at least 50 postseason games played over that stretch.

Unlike Ottawa coach Travis Green, who believed that the Leafs were "selling" calls, Leafs head coach Craig Berube didn't have anything negative to say about the officiating on the night.

'The refs call games. They call penalties for whatever reason. I thought we checked well with our feet and our sticks tonight. We were hard at our net. We were doing things right to stay out of the box," Berube said.

"You put yourself in the penalty box when you get on the wrong side of things and end up in desperate situations. We were pretty clean overall with our physical part of the game. We have to keep doing that."

As for the power play itself, Berube showered praise on goal scorers John Tavares and Matthew Knies.

"The power play has been rolling for a while. For me, it is about getting pucks to the net with numbers at the net. I can't say enough about Matthew Knies and JT in those areas," he said. "They have done an extremely good job with all of their work in the interior of the ice."

Toronto and Ottawa renew hostilities on Tuesday night, when the teams meet for Game 2 at Scotiabank Arena.
