The referees ended up issuing 22 penalties, all of which occurred in the final 40 minutes.

The Maple Leafs had six power plays, scoring three goals with the man-advantage to come out with a 6-2 victory. On the other hand, the Senators had only two power plays, a discrepancy that Senators coach Travis Green suggested post-game could be due to embellishment.

"We definitely have to stay out of the box, I'll say that," Green told reporters. "At the end of the game, sometimes, it can get a little out of hand once in a while.

"I thought there were a couple calls that they did a good job selling, it's tough on the refs, but we can't take that many penalties."

The biggest dive you'll ever see. Embarrassing. pic.twitter.com/xr9iuPPEAD
— Everyday Sens (@EverydaySens) April 21, 2025

Leafs coach Craig Berube didn't quite see things the same way.

"Penalties are penalties," he said. "We were disciplined, we're going to keep being disciplined."

While some of the Senators' penalties could've gone either way, others were easy calls for the officials. Ridley Greig got two minutes for cross-checking John Tavares. It was originally assessed as a major penalty but was later reduced to a minor.

When asked about the decision, Berube preferred to stay concentrated on his team.

"That's not my call," he said. "The referees and the league will look at things and make the calls they make. We're not going to focus on that."

While he said his team wouldn't focus on what they can't control, before Berube left the podium, he said clearly, "call the league." It's a direct reference to the play, which will surely be viewed by the NHL's head office.

The Leafs aren't going to get such a massive advantage in power plays in every game. While they won 6-2, the two teams were much closer to even at five-on-five play, and the Senators will be more disciplined going forward. It was a major focus of conversation during their post-game press conferences.

"It's clear as day what the issue was. We took too many penalties, they scored on it, and that's the game," said Brady Tkachuk, who was hearing it from Leafs fans all night.

Game 2 is on Tuesday, and if the Maple Leafs can pick up another win, they'll be sitting in an advantageous spot before the series flips to Ottawa.
