It found that trips to Canada by Americans decreased by 5.3 per cent compared to the same time last year, to 1.1 million visitors.

"This marked the first year-over-year decrease in arrivals to Canada by U.S. residents since March 2021," reads the report. "Most of the trips taken in February 2025 by U.S. residents were made by automobile (72.8 per cent) or by air (24.2 per cent)."

Americans visiting by car were down 6.5 per cent in February 2025 compared to 2024, which StatCan says marked the end of four consecutive months of year-over-year growth that began in October 2024. Over half of these arrivals were same-day trips.

U.S. residents flying to Canada increased by 0.6 per cent compared to the same month last year.

While the report does not give a reason for this drop, it could be attributed to the tensions between Canada and the U.S. as President Trump escalated his threat of tariffs in February.

When comparing monthly data, StatCan found that the overall number of arrivals in Canada by U.S. residents declined by 10.9 per cent in February compared to January. This marks the first monthly downturn since October 2024.

"In February 2025, the number of US residents arriving in Canada by air (-7.0 per cent) and by automobile (-12.6 per cent) fell, contributing to the overall monthly decline in U.S.-resident arrivals," reads the report.

However, this decline pales in comparison to the drop in Canadians travelling to the U.S.

According to the U.S. Customs and Border and Protection (CBP), the number of Canucks visiting their neighbours to the south dropped by half a million in February compared to the same time last year. In March, that number ballooned to 900,000.

Canadians have been pushing back against tariffs in their own way by cancelling their U.S. travel plans, which could be a reason for the drop in visitors down south.

A lot has changed since February, with new entry and exit requirements for Canadians visiting the U.S. for longer than a month.

StatCan also noted that 2.2 million Canadian residents returned from trips to the U.S. in February. That's a decrease of 17.7 per cent from the same time last year.

"Meanwhile, U.S. residents took 1.1 million trips to Canada in February, down 5.3 per cent from February 2024," reads the report. "Trips to Canada by U.S. residents represented 79.5 per cent of all non-resident travel to Canada in February 2025."
