The midge invasion hits like clockwork every spring, especially along Toronto's waterfront.
The vast majority of in-flight midges are males, who are waiting for a female to pass through so they can mate.
However, because different species of midges emerge at varying times, Toronto typically sees several bursts of midge swarms throughout the summer, and sometimes right into September.
Fortunately, the midges in Toronto don't bite, and while they can be mistaken for mosquitoes at first glance, they are harmless to humans.
For those living away from the waterfront, you're in luck, because midges typically stick close to the water, so you're less likely to experience their overbearing swarm effect.
