A new study has traced it to King Matthias Corvinus, a mid-15th century monarch, thanks to the skull’s resemblance to that of Corvinus’ illegitimate son. In fact, you could even come across the skull of a king and not know it for more than 20 years! They note that while Székesfehérvár’s King Stephen Museum has cautioned that further analysis is necessary to finalize the findings, “it can be assumed that the skull could have belonged to King Matthias.”King Matthias refers to Matthias Corvinus, King of Hungary and Croatia from 1458 to 1490. Also known as Matthias I, or by the nickname “the Just,” King Corvinus was a powerful reformer for his Kingdom. The likely discovery of King Matthias’ skull, which is still awaiting final confirmation through DNA analysis, is a notable one for scholars of Hungarian history; but it’s not as though the absence of his remains equates to an absence of King Matthias from the collective cultural memory.
