An Ontario politician who has stoked controversy throughout his political career has just successfully landed the seat of MP in his Toronto-area riding. Roman Baber may be best known for making waves during the COVID era, in which he was forcefully ousted from his position in Doug Ford's caucus for opposing extended lockdown mandates, and went on to try and sue the Province of Ontario. Though his January 2021 statement saying to "Look at the data — the virus is real, but the crisis is mostly in [long-term care]. Let's focus on LTC & hospital capacity, but ending the lockdown is best for our health" may have ended his career as an MPP, Baber went on to run for the House of Commons in the same-named riding in this month's federal election. And, by Monday's counts, the Conservative will now represent York-Centre, earning 55 per cent of votes (for a total of 25,609) against Liberal Ya'ara Saks (who secured 19,935 votes) and NDP candidate Yusuf Ulukanligil (who received 1,171 votes).
