“Gray wolves are a species natives to California, but around a century ago, humans killed them off. After 1924, a gray wolf was not documented in California until 2011, when a wolf known as OR-7 famously crossed the state line from Oregon. Those wolves were known as the Shasta pack, though the pack disappeared soon after it was discovered. The second pack of wolves was confirmed in 2017 and was known as the Lassen pack. A third, the Whaleback pack, was confirmed in 2020.
