According to researchers, Dionysus commonly appeared on burial tombs, but the wine competition scene was much less typical. Recently, archaeologists found a sarcophagus depicting the two mythic figures fighting an epic battle—except it wasn’t a fist fight or a clash of swords. He explained in the press release that Dionysus often appears on second and third century B.C. In fact, this is the first time a sarcophagus with the wine competition scene was found in the region, making it particularly interesting to researchers. “This is a thought-provoking discovery reflecting how life and faith were perceived in the Roman world,” he said in the press release.
