Children should never tease the lights, elders have said, lest the aurora swoop down and carry them into the skies.
Inuit people in Greenland, on the other hand, viewed Northern Lights as a pathway to the heavens.
But native peoples across the world’s coldest climates based their stories not only on the aurora borealis’ shimmering waves of colors.
So while solar storms may be causing auroras—not our ancestors or Arctic foxes—ancient people were correct when they said the lights brought sounds.
