A routine transatlantic flight turned into an unexpected round trip last week, when Etihad Airways' Airbus A380 (known as the world's largest passenger aircraft) was forced to return to Toronto Pearson Airport after a medical emergency mid-flight.
The aircraft, operating EY22 from Toronto to Abu Dhabi, had been in the air for over three hours when it reversed course just off the coast of Newfoundland.
Prior to landing, the aircraft spent approximately 30 minutes circling near Toronto to dump fuel.
On June 24, Etihad officially launched its daily A380 route from Abu Dhabi to Toronto, marking the first time the airline has brought its double-decker to the city.
Etihad's A380 is one of the world's most luxurious passenger aircraft, featuring 486 seats across four cabin classes.
