The Gordie Howe International Bridge is inching towards a promised but widely scrutinized fall 2025 completion date, soon to introduce the single-largest port of entry on the Canada-U.S. border to the Ontario side of the Detroit River. The sprawling 2.5-kilometre-long bridge connecting Ontario and Michigan will be home to the biggest and most modern port of entry (POE) out of over 100 such facilities on the Canadian side of the almost 8,900-kilometre U.S.-Canada border. The new Canadian POE, constructed as part of the $6.4 billion international undertaking, is now practically complete on a 53-hectare/130-acre site in Windsor, Ont. However, the bridge's intended primary uses serving international trade and tourism are now threatened by a deteriorating political relationship between Canada and the United States. Whether or not the new record holder for the longest cable-stayed bridge in North America becomes a boon to international trade or a costly white elephant remains a question only time can answer.
