Astronomers have identified what could be a new supermassive black hole, and with an estimated mass 36 billion times that of the sun, it has about 10,000 times the mass of the black hole at the center of the Milky Way. The scientists located the signs of the new supermassive black hole within a gravitational lens known as the “Cosmic Horseshoe,” pictured below. Collett also suggests that a black hole of such proportions could only originate from the merger of two supermassive black holes resulting from the collision of galaxies. The uncertainty is too high to consider it the most massive black hole known. As such, they claim that their discovery could represent the most massive black hole confirmed to date.
