Foundational software needs performance, reliability—and productivityThe needs of foundational software have a lot in common with all software, but everything is extra important. Traditionally, achieving the extra-strong requirements of foundational software has meant that you can’t do it with “normal” code. When I say that Rust’s mission is to target foundational software, I don’t mean that’s all it’s good for. In my view, though, the fact that foundational software needs control over low-level details only makes it more important to try and achieve good ergonomics.
