Among the most peculiar are brief pulses of extremely high-energy radio waves, known as fast radio bursts (FRB).
The team not only detected one of the brightest FRBs ever recorded, but also traced its origin with unprecedented precision.
The CHIME radio telescope in Canada, one of the world's leading FRB observatories, and a subnetwork of smaller stations called outriggers detected the anomalous outburst.
Thus, even detecting RBFLOAT is proof of concept that CHIME is indeed capable of detecting such events and building a statistically interesting sample of FRBs.”What Caused the RBFLOAT?
The authors estimate that they could achieve about 200 accurate RBF detections per year with just the signals CHIME captures.
