Scientists Discovered a Powerful Crystal That Breathes Oxygen Like a Living Thing

Here’s what you’ll learn when you read this story:A new study shows how an oxygen “breathing” metal oxide could play a central role in many green energy technologies. Made from iron, cobalt, and strontium, this metal oxide has the ability to expel and absorb oxygen at lower temperatures while remaining stable. But it can release oxygen when heated in a simple gas, and then reabsorb that oxygen without falling apart. But this new oxide releases oxygen at 400 degrees Celsius, which is still hot, but much cooler than the metal oxides that’ve come before it. While breathing oxygen remains central to life on Earth, it may one day also be central for certain materials that will (hopefully) power our green energy revolution.
