Manulife's impressive global headquarters at 200 Bloor Street East in Toronto stands among the city's most majestic architectural landmarks of the pre-Depression years, and the structure celebrated its centennial this week, marking 100 years since its grand opening on Aug. 26, 1925. Despite boasting a grand Beaux-Arts-style design with limestone exteriors by Sproatt & Rolph — the firm behind the University of Toronto's Hart House and the Royal York Hotel — the Manulife South Tower's distance from the street and use as an active headquarters for a major insurance company mean that few locals have actually seen what the property has to offer. However, members of the media were hosted at the building and its modern addition to celebrate its centennial this week, and offered a rare glimpse at the features and spaces within, like a bank vault and a greenhouse, to name a few.
