Toronto drivers who park or idle on streetcar routes during major snowstorms could soon be shelling out a lot more money for their winter driving mistakes — $500 to be exact.
Councillor Dianne Saxe, who first introduced the penalty increase, said fines of only $200 were insufficient in deterring drivers.
This past winter, Toronto was hit by some of the most intense snowstorms in recent history, with over 94 centimetres of snow falling across the city in February alone.
Before, snow was removed only after piles caused blockages or city storage capacity reached its limit.
City staff are set to report back in December with more recommendations for this upcoming winter season.
