Floating NeutralWhen it comes to bonding, there are two types of portable generators: bonded neutral and floating neutral. In a bonded neutral generator, the neutral wire is bonded to the frame or chassis of the generator. For example, a bonded neutral generator uses the frame of the generator as its grounding system, and in the case of a floating neutral generator, the system is grounded by the home electrical system. In such a case, a bonded generator should be used, as well as a grounding rod for extra safety. If you get a voltage reading, the generator is floating neutral, and if you get zero volts, the generator is bonded neutral.
