Dated to around 1.8 million years ago, this puts the fossil around 200,000 years into the lineage of Homo erectus, often considered the first hominid species to migrate throughout Europe and Asia.
This brings up the question of whether early migrations out of Africa occurred before the arrival of H. erectus.
Ultimately, the authors conclude that our models of human migration will need to be updated.
