Research has shown that not all intimate relationships are able to weather the same kinds of storms. Our intimate relationships provide safety, stability, and reassurance, even and perhaps especially when we are in pain. Their story is a remarkable example of the resilient power of intimate love between two human beings. But in matters of human love, the rules don’t always apply. To live and die for love is not what makes us human per se, but it is one of the most striking hallmarks of our humanity.
