A group of houses on a quiet Toronto side street could soon be razed to make way for a flashy new rental tower. Plans call for the homes to be demolished to make way for a 43-storey tower featuring a design from architects BDP Quadrangle that reads as a pair of tall stacked boxes. And while a tower replacing small homes on a residential street may stir up controversy among locals, the broader area planning context does add some food for thought. The homes on Talara Dr. are among the few undeveloped properties remaining along the 401's north side between Bayview and Leslie. A rental tower could pan out differently, though, catering to different demographics that may be more receptive to using the transit infrastructure at their doorstep.
