AI models are being unleashed into schools across the world, in a massive experiment on kids with uncertain results. Now, fresh research provides a clue about the tech’s effects on children’s education, and it’s not promising. According to a new study from Brookings Institution’s Center for Universal Education, AI poses profound risks to children’s social and intellectual development — and the consequences could be dire. One way AI models are undermining kids’ education: kids are offloading their thinking onto AI models, with even 65 percent of students surveyed expressing concern that the trend will lead to cognitive decline. They can even start forgetting things that they had learned in class because the AI models retain memories and information for them.
