The largest battle in biological history plays out across the Earth’s surface everyday, mostly unseen from human eyes. Hundreds of billions of bacteriophages live inside your gut, and these biological entities (not lifeforms, as they’re technically not alive) far outnumber all living organisms on Earth. The team used whole-genome sequencing and deep mutational scanning to get a full picture of this bacterial battle. Meanwhile, the bacteria developed novel mutations that specifically protected against phages in microgravity conditions. Ultimately, the hope is that these orbiting laboratories and their microgravity-induced mutations could give humanity a much-needed helping hand in the fight against AMR superbugs.
