But a recent sinkhole event drew the attention of national news, and reminded us that we’re not only observers of the world around us—we’re participants. To take the example of earthquakes, recent scientific research has demonstrated they’re definitely not getting more frequent than in the past. But the fact of the matter is that sinkholes are not only getting more frequent, they’re getting worse, as numerous recent studies demonstrate. Research also shows sinkhole frequency in the karst regions of northeast Spain increasing during droughts. Hopefully, in the future, improved sinkhole mitigation frameworks will help us identify escalating sinkhole risks before they happen.
