A mecca for Earth scientists, the Afar Triple Junction sits in the Y-shaped cradle of the Arabian, Nubian, and Somali plates. Of those features, today the Dabbahu Fissure is the star of the show. Eventually, extreme pressure caused magma to push up into the cracks between those rocks, busting open the Dabbahu Fissure in 2005. As the land splits apart, the Afar Depression will sink deeper and deeper, a process known as seafloor spreading. Perhaps the Dabbahu Fissure will follow in its footsteps.
